Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow (hereafter the Fellow) joined the UNU-IAS in late October 2016. Since then, the fellow has made an excellent progress in carrying out the proposed research project. The research title is: Can governance facilitate poor countries to achieve sustainable development goals? Exploring governance pathways for poverty reduction and environmental sustainability.

For the Year 2017, the fellow had planned: 1) to conduct fieldwork including expert interviews and the analysis of data and documents; 2) to draft scholarly papers, and 3) to present papers at the international conferences to share the key findings of the research. The fellow has successfully achieved all these tasks. In addition, the fellow delivered two presentations at international conferences and workshops in the UK and Nepal. In terms of publication, the fellow published one journal article and three book chapters. In short, the FY2017 has been very productive for generating data and producing outputs of the proposed research.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

There are three main reasons why the fellow saw his progress more than expected in the FY2017. First, he accomplished more tasks than planned for the fiscal year. The fellow not only collected data, but also analyzed it and used for the paper. Second, he had just planned to draft journal articles but he was able to publish one journal article and three book chapters. Third, he presented a paper at a conference in the UK. He was also invited as a panelist in an international workshop in Kathmandu. For these reasons, the fellow feels that he has achieved more than expected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The fellow has a plan to undertake important research tasks in FY2018. Important tasks include additional fieldwork involves in-depth interviews, drafting of journal articles and policy briefs and conducting policy workshops for sharing research findings. In addition, the fellow plans to present a paper at an international conference, that is, the 18th World Congress of the IUAES in Brazil from 16-20 July 2018 to share the key findings of the research and gain feedback from renowned scholars. In this fiscal year, the fellow will travel to Laos and Nepal for collecting additional data and sharing key policy findings with policy makers, scholars and international agencies.
