Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2017, Dr. Hussain continued her efforts to develop research related to violence, crime, and informality in cities in developing countries, adding issues arising from interaction of environmental challenges and water scarcity. The security condition in Karachi did not allow the original plan for field work, leading to change of her plans. To that end, she expanded her theoretical inquiry into a broader comparative analysis of philosophy of science, civil conflict and social movements, and organized crime and violence, leading to her paper “‘Order’ and ‘Disorder’ in Cities: a Critical Assessment”. She also wrote a paper titled, “Rethinking Political Influence: Why We Missed Trumpism and What Political Rigging Practices Portend for Democratic Process”.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Dr. Hussain is working to develop an interdisciplinary lens to study these important and complex challenges facing the world today. Especially in countries in the Global South, which lack resources and knowledge of these issues, and where instability will not remain localized but cascade to regional and international levels, this research is timely and important. To that end, Dr. Hussain is focusing on cities other than her original case study of Karachi, Pakistan to explore how other cities are experiencing similar challenges, albeit, in different social, economic, and political contexts. She has identified Manila, Philippines as the city, which is experiencing challenges in access to water and potential water scarcity. She is currently working on developing an understanding of this city.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Dr. Hussain will be developing these research ideas into papers for conferences, publication, and opinion pieces for wider audiences. She will also present her work at different fora for wider dissemination. In addition, she will conduct a review of literature on Manila to apply her framework. She will compare Karachi and Manila to develop comparative insights related to water scarcity and political volatility in the two cities. To that end, she will also conduct fieldwork in Manila for data collection including direct observations. She will analyze this data to produce a research paper and present it at one major conference in the profession. Her goal will be to come up with output, which is of relevance for policy solutions as well as contribute to intellectual debates on the issue.
