Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
FY2017 served as the field work, writing and outreach phase of the fellow’s research project. Accordingly, in a first step, he borrowed from state-of-the-art approaches to the study of institutional interaction, institutional complexes and international organizations to outline a theoretical framework. In a second step, he acquired an empirical basis for the fieldwork and surveyed the landscape of international institutions that address the rise of violent extremism and identified the specific functions of each institution in the complex. Both steps primarily required to review literature and pursue desk research based on available primary and secondary sources as planned. He pursued a field trip to New York in March 2018 and conducted a series of interviews with UN diplomats, UN Secretariat officials and experts in the field, which serve as a basis for the dissemination phase of the project in FY2018. Besides his work on the original research project, he revised his book manuscript on UN Sanctions Governance, submitted a book proposal to a brand publisher and currently works on finalizing a publication contract. In addition, the fellow has been particularly active on drafting and revising journal articles and attended several internationally high-ranking conferences, presenting three newly drafted research articles based on his research in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In FY2017, the fellow has made more progress than expected. Based on the purchased books and using the software, he progressed in his desk research that assisted him in the field research phase. Besides this, he has published three articles in international peer-reviewed journals (International Relations and Development, Journal of International Public Administration, Journal of Economic Policy Reform) on topics related to his research in Japan. He has continued to refine two working papers, which received “revise & resubmit” in international peer-reviewed journals (The Review of International Studies, European Journal of International Relations) as well as two chapters that are currently under review. He has also drafted two working papers (a manuscript for the EISA Pan-European Conference 2017 and a manuscript for the ECPR General Conference 2017). He has also made major revisions to his book manuscript on UN Sanctions Governance including drafting a book proposal and revising two sample chapters. The book proposal was positively reviewed by a brand publisher (Routledge) with the decision pending. In addition, he received the Award for Best Dissertation from the UN Association of Germany (DGVN). Besides these outstanding achievements, he has also published two shorter policy-relevant articles on UN sanctions and conflict prevention.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In line with the initial research plan and based on the desk and field research in FY 2017, FY2018 will serve as the analysis and dissemination phase before the end of his tenure in September 2018. Accordingly, the fellow wants to further develop his agenda in two ways. In a first step, the fellow will further analyze the acquired empirical material on the study of the institutional complex of UN counter-terrorism. In a second step, he plans to attend two high-ranking international conferences (International Studies Association Annual Convention, European Workshops in International Studies) for presenting the results of the research conducted while in Japan. Besides his work on the original research project, he intends to proceed to revise his book manuscript on UN Sanctions Governance with the aim of completing the manuscript and finally publishing the book during FY2018. Finally, the fellow seeks to attain a highly competitive position as an assistant professor of International Relations, both in Europe and worldwide.
