Outline of Annual Research Achievements

世界の様々なゆっくり地震のデータ解析を進めた。国内では北海道東北沖日本海溝において大規模な微動活動を検出し、巨大地震、群発地震や地形との対応を明らかにした。これまで存在しないと考えられていた日本海溝のゆっくり地震の発見のインパクトは大きく、結果はScience誌に掲載されマスコミ等で報道された。南海では浅部微動のイベントサイズ分布を決定、ブラウン運動型のゆっくり地震との整合性を確認した結果をGRL誌で出版した。北米カスケードではそれまで低周波地震として認識されていた現象の背後に長周期成分が存在し、一連の活動がブラウン運動と同様の超広帯域現象であることを明らかにした。この成果はJGR誌に掲載された。メキシコおよびチリでは海溝軸近傍で発生する微動現象を発見した。チリの結果はSRL誌に掲載された。ニュージーランドではこれまで未知の現象を含む様々な微動現象を発見した。この結果はEPS誌に掲載された。多くの結果がそれぞれの地域では初めての発見であり、全世界的な微動の活動の様子がさらに明らかになった。
これらのデータ解析結果は、1次元もしくは2次元のブラウン運動型の確率過程ゆっくり地震モデルで良く説明できる。既存のクラック進展モデルに時間的な擾乱を加えることで、ブラウン運動より多様な地震、ゆっくり地震の性質を表現できることが分かった。この結果はGRL誌に掲載された。
断層帯の脆性-塑性不均質レオロジー特性に温度依存性を考慮した1自由度系の物理モデルの挙動を解析的に検討し、スロー地震の深さ依存性を再現するために必要とされる特性を明らかにした。
測地データを用いてシステムの外力に対する応答のモデルを高度化した。具体的には、大気圧や海底圧力に対するグローバル変形の理論の高度化、地殻深部における流体の存在を考慮した場合の断層すべりや地殻変動の時空間発展モデルの開発を開始した。

Reason

本年度は世界の様々な地域での結果が次々に成果として出版されたことで、研究が順調に進んでいることは明らかである。しかしその中でチリとの共同研究は現地での政情不安などから11月以降膠着してしまっている。それに加えて3月からは新型コロナウィルス感染拡大によって海外の研究者との交流が取りにくくなった。本来は当初計画以上に進んだといってもおかしくないところだが、その分のマイナスを考慮して、概ね順調に進展していると判断する。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

データの収集及び管理のために以下を実施する。(1)すでに確立した日本(主にHi-net, DONET, S-net, F-net)、メキシコ、チリ、ニュージーランド、台湾、アメリカ、カナダの定常観測データを更新する。(2)新しいデータとして、メキシコ(海底地震計)、ニュージーランド(南島)の臨時観測データを導入、品質評価する。
以下の項目についてデータ解析と理論研究を進める。
(1A)超低周波地震、低周波地震の断層メカニズムを推定し、プレート境界形状と活動の統計的性質を調べる。南海トラフ近傍及びパークフィールドの低周波地震に適用する。(1B)微動からスロースリップまでの超広帯域スペクトル計算手法を改良し、西南日本およびカスケード地域に適用、その地域性を解明する。(1C)東日本のプレート境界地震をS-netの海底地震計を用いて分析する手法を開発する。(1D)地震すべりの初期破壊と主破壊の関連性から不均質性を定量化する手法を開発する。
(2A)潮汐と微動活動からプレート境界の摩擦法則を推定する手法をニュージーランドの新しいデータに対して適用する。(2B)東日本のプレート境界地震の階層性についての研究を日本全国に一般化する。(2C)階層性破壊モデルにおける階層破壊の連鎖確率と地震活動パラメターの理論的関係について論文にまとめる。
(3A)潮汐等の外力による載荷の時間変化がゆっくり地震の超広帯域スペクトルに及ぼす影響を検討する。(3B)東日本のプレート境界地震とプレート内部地震の予測可能性の違いを定性的に明らかにする。研究成果は適宜学術論文として公表するとともに、日本地球惑星科学連合大会、日本地震学会で公表し議論する。海外渡航が可能であれば米国地球惑星物理学会でも公表し議論する。
