Project Period (FY) 2016-04-01 – 2019-03-31
KeywordsRaman spectroscopy / Diamond-anvil cell / Laser heating / Multi-anvil experiment
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Specification, manufacturer selection, design and build of a combined Raman microscope system by Horiba Japan. Project took large amount of negotiation. The instrument is designed for use with the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC).

Other instrumentation purchased: fibre laser and optical components for beam delivery. A capsule welder was also ordered (PUK 5) and delivered to enable development of multi-anvil experiments in the presence of applied gas pressures up to 100 bar. This technique is in addition to the DAC experiments originally proposed.

A joint project was started with Professor J. Li at University of Michigan (UM). This projects involved 3 visits to establish the gas-loading skills in UM in support of the work originally proposed.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Progress delayed because of long negotiation time with company of long delivery time. Raman system instrument was delivered at end FY2016 and budget for additional spending from grant was already committed in full. Further spending had to await FY2017 start. System build and testing will now start in FY2017.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Commissioning and testing of Raman system with DAC. Implementation of off-axis Raman scattering stage for DAC (Horiba design). Order and installation of temperature-measurement spectrometer from Horiba. Coding and implementation of software for T measurement. Further collaboration with University of Michigan for flexible gas-loading system. Proofing and development of metal sample absorbers for high-temperature generation with transparent gas mixtures. Preliminary multi-anvil capsule preparation for low-pressure experiments with argon and other volatile mixtures.
