Outline of Annual Research Achievements

電子移動過程は光合成、呼吸プロセスなどのエネルギー変換において非常に重要な役割を果たしている。光合成は水を4電子酸化することで酸素を生成して4電子と4プロトンを得る過程であり、呼吸は逆に酸素を4電子還元して水に戻すことによりエネルギーを獲得する過程である。水と酸素との間の4電子・4プロトンの相互変換の間には、様々な金属酸素錯体が活性種として関与している。しかし、金属酸素錯体の電子移動特性、特に多電子移動過程については、エネルギー変換において最も基本的かつ重要なものであるにもかかわらず、まだ不明な点が多い。本基盤研究では、申請者が行って来た金属イオン共役電子移動研究の成果を基に「基底状態及び励起状態の金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御」を行うことを目的としている。平成28年度では、マンガン(V)-オキソ錯体の金属イオン共役電子移動反応について報告し、鉄(IV)-オキソ錯体の電子移動反応制御についてもまとめて報告した。また、水の触媒として多孔性配位高分子であるため活性点の設計が可能なプルシアンブルー類似体 (PBA)に着目し、コバルト置換プルシアンブルー類似体 (PBA)の空隙内部に酸化還元不活性な金属イオン (カルシウムイオンなど) を組み込んだPBAを合成した。カシウムイオンを組み込んだCo置換PBAを触媒として用いることでNa2S2O8による水の光触媒酸化反応で初めて最大量子効率である200%を達成した。さらに海水と空気中の酸素から太陽光を用いて過酸化水素を効率よく生成させることに成功し、それをそのまま過酸化水素燃料電池の燃料として用いて発電できることを示した。水の光酸化触媒を最適化することにより、過酸化水素生成のエネルギー変換効率をさらに向上させることができた。また、水と酸素から生成する過酸化水素を用いたベンゼンから直接フェノールを合成することにも成功した。

Reason

本研究課題では、金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御により高い活性を有する水の酸化触媒を開発することが重要な目的の一つであった。上述のようにコバルト置換プルシアンブルー類似体 (PBA)の空隙内部にカルシウムイオンを組み込んだPBAを触媒として用いることでNa2S2O8による水の光触媒酸化反応で初めて最大量子効率である200%を達成したことは当初の計画以上の成果であった。また、地球上で最も豊富な資源である海水と空気中の酸素から太陽光を用いて過酸化水素を効率よく生成させることに成功し、それをそのまま過酸化水素燃料電池の燃料として用いて発電できることを示したことも当初の予想以上の研究成果である。光触媒の最適化によりエネルギー変換効率は1%近くまで向上し、実用化も視野に入る段階まで来た。さらに、マンガン(V)-オキソ錯体の金属イオン共役電子移動反応の結果を基に、当初の計画以外にキラルな配位子を用いたマンガン-オキソ錯体を触媒として用いて基質の不斉光酸化反応に成功したことも大変満足できる成果となった。平成28年度の査読付き論文の発表数は、J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nature Communications などの国際誌に58報となり、論文の引用数も38000回を越している。平成28年度は8回国際会議に招待され、そのうち5回で基調講演、2回は国際賞を受賞し、のそれぞれ受賞講演を行った。このように本研究成果は国際的に高く評価された。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

本基盤研究では、申請者が行って来た金属イオン共役電子移動研究の成果を基に「基底状態及び励起状態の金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御」を行うことを目的としている。基底状態の金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御についてはこれまで数多くの研究成果をあげてきた。今後は基底状態の金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御に加えて励起状態の金属酸素錯体の多電子移動精密制御についても積極的に取り組んで行きたい。金属酸素錯体の励起状態についてはこれまでほとんど研究されていない。一般に金属酸素錯体は不安定であるので、低温での測定が必要となり、また励起状態の寿命は短いものが多いのでフェムト秒レーザー時間分解分光法を用いる必要がある。フェムト秒レーザー時間分解分光を低温で測定する装置があるので、これをフルに活用して金属酸素錯体の励起状態の新しい化学を開拓していく予定である。すでに予備実験ではある金属-オキソ錯体の励起状態が驚くほどの長寿命を有するなど、興味深い結果を得ている。今後の研究の進展が楽しみな状況である。
