Development of highly efficient water splitting photocatalyst sheets and establishment of their working principles

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

研究代表者は種々の水分解用半導体光触媒粉末を導電性材料等に平面状に固定化した「光触媒シート」に加工すると、水分解反応の効率が飛躍的に向上することを見出している。現状、太陽エネルギーから水素エネルギーへの変換効率(STH)はほぼ1%であるが、本研究課題により、STHが5%を実現できる「光触媒シート」の開発を行うとともに、「光触媒シート」の作動原理を厳密に解明することにより、人工光合成の大規模実現に向けて確固たる学術的指針を確立することを目的とする。
平成30年度は「光触媒シート」作動原理解明および太陽エネルギー変換効率向上を目指し、主として下記の課題に取り組んだ。
水素生成光触媒と酸素生成光触媒を結びつける導電性材料は両者とオーミックな接合をしていることが理想的と考えられる。しかし、現実にそのような接合を形成することは不可能である。そこで、個々の光触媒だけを固定化したシートを用いて電気化学的な検討を行い、シート作製前に光触媒粒子に表面修飾を施す事が有効であることを見出した。その結果、水素生成光触媒、酸素生成光触媒共に、波長600 nmまでの長波長の光を利用可能な非酸化物光触媒のみからなるシートを用いて可視光水分解反応を進行させることが可能となった。
従来の光触媒シートは真空プロセスである粒子転写法を用いて光触媒粉末を導電性材料に固定化していたが、プロセスのスケールアップやコストに課題があった。研究代表者はインジウム錫酸化物(ITO)コロイドを光触媒粉末と混合してインクを作製し、これを基板に塗布後に焼成することで、真空プロセスを用いずに大面積展開可能で、大気圧下で水を水素と酸素に高効率に分解する光触媒シートを開発した。ITOは仕事関数が大きく、逆反応に不活性であり、可視域で透明であるために塗布プロセスによる光触媒シートの作製に適していることを明らかにした。
