本研究は国際陸上科学掘削計画(ICDP)オマーン掘削プロジェクトに参画し，オマーンオフィオライトのマントル－地殻境界相当層を貫く新たな掘削孔を提案・実行し，コア試料の岩石学・地球化学・構造地質学的解析から，地球科学の未解決問題であるモホ面の実態および地殻－マントル境界の構造と物理的特性を明らかにするものである。平成29年度は平成28年度に掘削された下部地殻のはんれい岩，および，マントルセクション基底部から掘削された変かんらん岩類とメタモルフィックソールのコアを地球深部探査船「ちきゅう」に輸送し，7月中旬から9月中旬にかけて船上の機材を利用して，岩石コアの記載と解析を行った。ちきゅう船上で火成岩や変成岩のコアを扱うのは初めてであったため，コアを解析する手法も含めて検討を行った。この試みは平成30年度に予定されるマントル－地殻境界相当層のコア試料の記載および解析にむけて役立つこととなった。コア記載の結果の一部を12月のアメリカ地球物理学連合秋季大会で発表した。一方，マントル－地殻境界の掘削は，掘削地をワディ・タイン岩体のワディ・ジーブに最終決定した。掘削は，ICDPオマーン掘削の第２期にあたる平成29年11月～平成30年３月に実施した。コア掘削はCM1A孔(400m)とCM2A孔(300m)の２カ所で実施した。途中，破砕帯もありたびたび難航したが，最終的にほぼ100%の回収率を達成した。とくにCM1A孔は下部地殻の層状ガブロから地殻－マントル遷移帯を貫き，マントル最上部のハルツバージャイトに到達することに成功した。さらにCM1B孔とCM2B孔の２本を別途掘削し，最新の検層ツールによる孔内検層を実施した。本研究の掘削によって採取したコア試料はオマーンから清水港に向けて輸送中である。

オマーン掘削のフェーズ１の掘削コアを地球深部探査船「ちきゅう」船上でコア記載を実施したほか，フェーズ２の陸上掘削において，地殻－マントル境界の掘削を平成29年11月～平成30年３月に無事に完了した。地殻－マントル境界からはCM1A孔400mとCM2A孔300mのコアを採取することに成功した。また，孔内物理検層用の掘削孔を２本掘削し，孔内検層を実施した。

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
まずはオマーン掘削のフェーズ１の掘削コアを使用した研究を進める。そのための岩石学的研究に携わる研究員を一人採用する。オマーン掘削のフェーズ２で得られた掘削コアの記載は平成30年7月～9月に清水港に停泊中の地球深部探査船「ちきゅう」船上で実施を予定している。その際に，フェイズ１のコア記載で獲得したノウハウを十分に活用する。さらに船上コア記載で得られるデータと孔内物理検層で得られたデータの総合化を目指す。掘削孔内検層および岩石物性計測を行い，海洋地殻－マントル境界付近の物性を明らかにし，モホ不連続面との対応関係を明らかにする。また，岩石学的手法を通して，地殻－マントル遷移帯の形成プロセスの検討と，熱水による変質プロセスの実態を明らかにする。EBSDを用いた解析により，マントル流動の強度と剪断センスを同定し，モホ面直下のマントルの流動勾配を検証する。
