Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In order to elucidate the background of the social changes that occurred during the middle period of the Satsuma culture (around the end of the 9th century), which is considered to be a epoch in the history of the formation of the Ainu culture, we conducted excavations of the settlement of the Satsumon culture at the Oshima 2 site in Kitami City. As a result of the excavation, traces of pit dwelling abandonment rituals were frequently found at the site. On the other hand, the influence of the Okhotsk culture, which has been assumed to be the cause of the peculiarity, was confirmed in the selection of building materials and other aspects. Thus, this study shows that it is necessary to estimate the influence of the Okhotsk culture on social changes during the middle period of the Satsumon culture more than before.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
