Outline of Final Research Achievements

Developed turbulence is composed of the hierarchy of various-scale vortices. In this study, we have conducted direct numerical simulations of turbulence under several boundary conditions and developed extensive post-processing (i.e. the four-dimensional analysis) of the obtained numerical data. Then we have revealed the concrete picture and sustaining mechanism of the hierarchy of vortices in turbulence. More precisely, small-scale vortices in the region apart from a solid wall are sustained by being stretched by larger-scale vortices. We have also shown that the energy is transferred from larger to smaller scales through this vortex-stretching process.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
