Outline of Final Research Achievements

We showed that the frequency of the Zither illusion, which is perceived by the smooth motion of equiluminant red and green boundaries with oscillating motion at about 10 Hz, changes in response to individual differences and intra-individual variations in alpha wave frequency. Furthermore, we developed a technique to modulate the frequency of alpha waves using transcranial AC electrical stimulation, and showed that the appearance of the Zither illusion changes in response to the manipulation of alpha wave frequency. These results suggest that alpha waves are closely related to the Zither illusion. In addition, coherence analysis of MEG data showed that the exchange of information between dorsal and ventral regions increased during the perception of the Zither illusion, suggesting that alpha waves may determine the rhythm of information transfer between visual regions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
