Outline of Annual Research Achievements

- 27/7/19: I read a paper titled "Learning to linger: on memory & migration in Eiko Otake’s movement art" as part of the Japanese Theatre Workshop, Deutsches Institut Fur Japanstudien, Tokyo. The paper looked at the relationship between documents, body and memory in Eiko Otake's solo dance piece, "A Body in Fukushima".
- 30/7/19: I published an article in the Japan Times newspaper on the performing arts section of the Aichi Triennale. The article looked at the role of performance as a political mode in the context of "fake news" and digital documents.
- 14/08/19: I published an article in the Japan Times newspaper on the Theatre Olympics in Toga Village, Toyama, Japan and St. Petersburg, Russia. The following month (24/9/19), I published an article in the same publication that looked back at 10 years of Kyoto Experiment. Based on an extensive interview with former festival director, Hashimoto Yusuke, the article reflected on the changing character of truth and politics in performance over the past decade.
- 06/11/19: I published an article in the Japan Times newspaper on the socio-cultural implications of building the Theatre E9 venue in Kyoto.
- 01/07/20: I published a chapter called "In Search of Direction: Mapping, Materiality and Theatre Ecology in Rural Japan" in the book titled 漂流の演劇: 維新派のパースペクティブ, edited by Prof. Nagata Yasushi for Osaka University Press. The chapter considered the ecological and performative implications of the interaction between land, memory and documentary remains in the work of erstwhile Osaka based theatre company Ishinha.
