Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to look at the prosocial behavior between different species. Here, we showed the prosocial behavior between different animals for the first time. Children and dogs were trained to select between two types of tokens, one only reward themselves (the selfish token) and the other rewards both the child and the dog (the prosocial token). When both children and dogs were rewarded at the same time when choosing the prosocial token, the children and the dogs selected both tokens randomly. But when their own reward delayed and they were able to see the rewarding procedure of their partners during the prosocial choice, both children and dogs were able to select the prosocial token more often. It is possible that during rewarding, the children or the dogs were not paying attention to their partners. In addition, long gaze dogs (the dogs which look at their partner's face longer) chose more prosocial tokens. We do not know whether it is because the dogs concerned about their partners more, or they pay more attention to their partners so they can know whether their partners were rewarded or not. In addition, the choice of the prosocial token is related to the interaction between partners. Social pressure may be important for generating prosocial behavior.
