Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Using the outcomes of single capsule behavior, a transient two-dimensional continuous solid phase packed bed model has been developed for a pilot scale (200 kWh) latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES), and validated by comparing to the reported experimental results. The dynamic thermal performance of this system has been analyzed numerically. Using the developed models, detailed characteristics of heat transfer between the capsules and heat transfer fluid has been obtained. Parametric analyses have been conducted to study the influence of mass flow rate and Stefan number on the thermal performance and efficiency of the storage system.
