This research has been conducted on a corpus of three texts chosen as representative of the transmission of Greek philosophy and science to the medieval Syriac and Arabic traditions, especially regarding Ancient Greek theories of mixture.
The first text is the treatise "On the parts and whole to Sergius" by 6th century Neoplatonic philosopher and Christian theologian Philoponus, a work lost in Greek but still extant in Syriac which provides an insight into the way Greek philosophical concepts used in the theories of mixture, e.g. conservation in act or potency, could be used in a non physical context, namely the discussion of the actual presence of several natures in Christ.
The second text, 9th century Arabic philosopher al-Kindi's "Pharmacological Computus", has allowed to study the shift from conceptual models of unity or plurality in Greek theories of mixture to quantitative models based on mathematical theories in Arabic medicine and pharmacology.
The third text, 13th century Arabic physician and philosopher Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi's treatise "On mixture", shows that despite the shift found in al-Kindi, the influence of Greek philosophical thinking on physical processes of mixture continues to be felt far into Arabic medieval philosophy, whether originating from the Peripatetic tradition (mostly Alexander of Aphrodisias) or the Neoplatonic one.
