Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first half of this project, I have been able to collect relevant information on foreign entertainers during the Carolean period through secondary sources. The research trip to the UK during March has allowed me to consult various primary sources (manuscripts) held in institutions such as the Bodleian Library, Oxford University and The British Museum among others. While I have not been able to collect all relevant materials on foreign entertainers during the age of Charles II, I am satisfied with the progress I have made thus far. I plan on presenting my findings in July at a conference organised by the Johnson Society of Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Not only have I been able to amass information on foreign entertainers through the use of various secondary sources but I have also been able to consult original manuscripts in the UK as planned. While I have yet to analyse the impact of foreign entertainers on the literature of the period, most of the information has been collected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the second half of this project, I firstly intend to consult more relevant manuscripts in the UK in the hope that I will find some new information on relevant theatrical personnel. Secondly, I hope to analyse the impact of foreign entertainers on the English drama of the period. This will require analysis of play texts and also a compilation of audience reaction to foreign entertainers on the London stage.
