Outline of Final Research Achievements |
My two-year research into the activities of London booksellers, such as Nathaniel Butter, John Wright and Thomas Pavier, in the early seventeenth century has shown that these booksellers attempted to make the most of the growing yearning for Elizabethan Protestantism among London citizens, publishing plays which appealed to their nationalistic and anti-Catholic sentiments. I have then situated a dozen Jacobean plays, including Shakespeare's, in this cultural context.
