Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1) While studying viruses from deep subseafloor sediment, I discovered that current virus techniques are not efficient at extracting viruses from the sediment. I developed a new method for separating viruses that can improve recovery of viruses from sediment by two orders of magnitude. This lowers the limit of detection so that I can detect viruses in sediment with extremely low biomass. This method was also successfully tested on viruses from iron mat samples. Data and experiments for the manuscript have been completed. The manuscript is currently in progress. 2) DNA sequencing of the subsurface coalbed virus community was completed. Bioinformatic analysis of the virus community is currently in progress. Assembly and annotation of the sequences is being performed.
