Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Ionic gels (IGs) using ionic liquids (ILs) have received remarkable attention for their advanced application in electrochemical and electromechanical devices, such as actuators, lithium batteries, electric double-layer capacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells and fuel cells. In this work for we used multifunctional thiol monomers having uniform structure and good compatibility with the IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (BMImFSI) to develop new types of ionic gels. We have characterized their conductive, thermal and mechanical properties and investigated their internal structure by scanning microscopic light scattering (SMILS) techniques. The mesh size of the IGs was found to be highly dependent on the functionality of the monomer both in IL and conventional solvent media. This can be an important tool to combine internal structures with the mechanical properties for characterization of soft materials in a smart nondestructive way.
At the same time, we have also successfully made a new type of tough and flexible composite material based on d IL, its polymer and CNT. These composites are highly potential material for fabricating electrical sensors and actuators. Their mechanical, conductive, morphological and thermal properties have been investigated. One of the very unique point of these composites are their high conductivity at low CNT content. We have found conductivity of 4.5 S/cm at 15 wt% CNT content. This materials showed high potential to use in electrochemical devices.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

According to the proposal that I have submitted during last year, my plan was to develop ionic gels using variety of combination and characterize them. I am happy to inform here that I have not only successfully synthesized but also achieved promising results in developing new types of ionic gels. I have also characterized their internal structure and results based on these experiments will be reported very soon.
Also, for application of these ionic gels and developing actuators new type composite materials based on ionic liquid its polymer and CNT have developed. These material will be used as an electrode material for actuators. The composite materials showed tunable mechanical toughness that can be controlled by the amount of ionic polymers and ionic liquid. They also exhibited high conductivity and have the potential to use as a filament for 3D printer.
I have presented these research results in several international conferences and and published as peer reviewed proceeding. I am currently preparing to submit my work in peer reviewed journal.
My activities were not only limited in research work only, I have also joined domestic internship at a company (NIDEK CO. LTD.) and attended outreach activity (SRI innovation workshop at USA) to widen my make myself capable of the future demand.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The plans of my future research activity are described below:
The approach of 3D printing that I have initiated last year would like to continue. The 3D printing of Ionic gels and composite materials are very challenging. For example the in case of ionic gels the initiator concentration need to be determined and the resolution of printed materials and their properties are a matter of high concern. In this fiscal year i would like to overcome the challenges and would like to make successful results.
The results I have found in the previous fiscal year, I would like to report them in peer reviewed scientific journals. I have already started to compile my data.
To increase my research knowledge and experience I will go for an international internship in a foreign company during this fiscal year. This experience will not only increase my knowledge but also I will know variety of technology that will help me to support and improve my current research and their applications ideas and develop my communication skills. It will also give me a view of my future career and help me choose my career path.
