Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first year of this project was dedicated to creating the software that is required for the experiment which we plan to carry out in the 2017 academic year.
The software allows short sections of passages from graded readers to be scrolled along the student's screen at a steady, slow speed. Some words have been replaced by question marks with a colored background. When a question mark appears, a set of words appear with the same colored background, and the student selects the one that fits the sentence. The passages are at progressive levels of difficulty, and data is collected on how long it took the student to select the word, and how many of the words in each passage were selected correctly.
The hypothesis is that those students who do extensive reading during the year will get higher scores and select words more quickly than students without extensive reading training due to the additional practice with word and grammatical pattern recognition. Another potential use of the software may be as a quick reading placement test. We will correlate the scores with the students' TOEFL tests both in April and the following December. Reason
The main problem we are facing is to identify a control group of students who are studying English intensively but who are not using Extensive Reading. They will need to take the same scrolling cloze test at the beginning and end of their school term.

We are spreading information about the project at various conferences and online groups in order to find more students to participate in the project.
