Outline of Final Research Achievements

Fallibilism attracted many philosopher. For example, pragmatists or Karl Popper. We cannot deny that they are very important philosophers in 20th century. And these philosophers who accept fallibilism often give a very important role to common sense in epistemology. My aim in this project is to study historical relationship between the modern fallibilists and the early modern ones, especially Thomas Reid or George Berkeley and to reveal their resemblance in epistemological structure.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

われわれにとって知識というものは、特に科学的知識に代表されるように、世界のありかたを理解する重要な手がかりとして考えられており、社会においても非常に重視されているものである。しかし、そのちしきがそもそもどのようなものであるのかということは、常に問われつづけられなければならない。知識・真理という概念がどのように歴史的に影響関係を持ちつつ変化しているのかを明らかにすることで、現代において知識というものをどのようなものとして捉えることができるのかという考察の手がかりとなる。
