Outline of Final Research Achievements

Martin Luhters annotations to the Sermons of Johannes Tauler, the main source for investigations into his relations to the (German) mysticism, are philologically only insufficiently edited in the Weimar edition (1893) including the corrections and additions by Johannes Ficker (1936). Through a reexamination of the original in Zwickau (Saxony) it could be found out that the annotations were made in two periods - before and after the binding of the book. By means of broad investigations in some 15 libraries and archives in Germany, then, the time and place of the binding could also be made probable: Wittenberg or Leipzig in 1515/16. Along with observations about the use of inks we can say Luther made his annotations in a few months - late autumn 1515 and late winter 1516. A new edition of the annotations with context and commentary is being prepared.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
