| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the 3rd year of my project I focused on the interrelations of autofiction and essayism. Referring to the discussion of “the essay as the new novel”, it seemed to be fruitful to ask for the position of the essayist as the creator of a subjective non-fictional text in the light of the autofiction debate. Therefore, I examined esp. Peter Handke’s five-part essay “Essay on (…)” (1989 - 2013), Christian Kracht’s essays on journeys to Asia “Der gelbe Bleistift / The Yellow Pencil” (2000) and Peter Weiss’s three volume semi-fictional, autobiographical novel “Aesthetics of Resistance” (1975 - 1981).
I intensified the dialogue with our European partners, namely the Institute for German Studies at University of Vienna. Thanks to my library research (Austrian National Library, University Library Vienna) in August 2018 and in March 2019 I was able to include recently published secondary literature as well as primary sources, e.g. notebooks and handwritings of Peter Handke.
In May 2018, I attended an international conference at Keio University (Tokyo) and discussed aspects of facts in fiction in Alfred Andersch`s works with Prof. Dr. Joerg Doering (University Siegen, Germany) and held a talk. In June 2018, I published an extended version of this talk.
