Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This fiscal year has been productive for the project. We have got a solid general picture of honorifics, politeness and social meaning. The members have published one edited book, one journal paper, a number of papers in conference proceedings and books. and have given many presentations at international conferences and other venues. The PI has a book proposal currently under review at Oxford on the topic of the grant; a proposal for an edited volume is also under review, and one for a jointly written book on particles is in preparation. The general issue of the grant has also been found to connect to a range of other areas, including the semantics and pragmatics of gender marking and social meaning; a workshop on the latter is accepted and will be held in France in summer 2017.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is progressing smoothly. We have made substantial advances on the general domain of inquiry; the issues of the project prove to connect to a much larger domain than we initially thought, and at this moment we are engaged in working on the general theory, which has necessitated a step away from the specific phenomena of politeness that were our initial focus. However, the general theory is falling into place, and the PI is now engaged in a book-length project on politeness and honorification in particular and developing connections to the larger domain of social meaning. We anticipate the completion of this book (and hopefully publication) within the grant period.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year we anticipate to be a highly productive one. The PI is working on a book which is currently under review at Oxford; if the proposal is accepted, the project can hopefully be finished during this FY (or at worst during 2018). The PI is also co-organizing a workshop at ESSLLI 2017 at which the co-investigator will also present. A number of journal papers are also in preparation, and we anticipate a number of conference presentations during the year as well, in addition to an invited talk by the PI at ZAS in Berlin at a workshop on register and social meaning.
