Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2018, production as well as perception data were collected in order to continue to investigate the phonetic nature of depressors as well as some other non-salient consonants. Perception experiments were prepared based on data annotated by ICU research assistants. In Xitsonga, breathy consonants function as depressor consonants (i.e. lower F0), while non-breathy consonants do not lower tone. When focusing on nasals, Xitsonga speakers were lowering the tone after breathy ones. In SiSwati, breathy consonants have limited distribution. The analysis of breathy versus non-breathy consonants suggest that the contrast in SiSwati is better analyzed as a voicing contrast due to lack of evidence for breathy voice. In addition, nasals in TshiVenda were further investigated for the place contrast between dental and alveolar. Acoustic and video analyses show that speaker variation exists. Also, the Japanese data revealed to have positional variation in the realization of voicing.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
In the first year of the project (2016), the purchase of the Electroglottograph (EGG) was delayed which resulted in the delay of the beginning of the data collection. The EGG equipment and its analysis program (EGGnog) are running smoothly, but external constraints have been delaying the project. I cannot be absent for an extended period of time from my university duty. Thus, the data collection has to occur within a very short time of window. The Japanese data collection was delayed but now the collection has been completed. A no-cost extension of the project has been approved to complete it in 2019.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The project will continue for one more year as a no-cost extension. Analyzed data will be disseminated at a domestic conference (ICPP) in December and an international Conferences (SICSS) in November. Moreover, research papers are written to be submitted to academic journals.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The remaining funds will be used for the final analysis of the data and if available for supporting the travel to conferences.
