Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the past year, the phonetic typology of the interaction between tone and depressor consonants (consonants that lower pitch; called depressors hereafter) was investigated. Experiments examining the phonetics of depressors in Xitsonga, SiSwati and Japanese. Additionally place contrast of dental and alveolar nasals in Tshivenda was investigated. Articulatory data shows that Xitsonga has active breathiness while Siswati doesn't always have reflection in the acoustic signal. Perception data revealed that non-native speakers in the same linguistic sphere don't always distinguish contrast in other languages. In Japanese, the focus was on the voicing that has shown the effect of various acoustic variables. These results have shown the phonetic bases forphonological depressor consonants, and how these characteristics interplay with cognitive aspects of depressors in language with or without phonologized consonant-tone interaction. In the current study, we have also investigated the articulation of depressors using Electroglottograph that measures the degree of the closure of vocalfolds will show whether there is any interplay between the movement of vocal folds and the mechanism of producing depressors. Results that show different movement of vocal folds of the same voiced consonants.
