Outline of Final Research Achievements	The purpose of this study is to solve problems related to international undergraduate students’ability to summarize university lectures. We analyzed the relation between the characteristics of expressions used in 2 lectures and the results of comprehension surveys. Based on a search of a Japanese“functional sentence patterns”found in the 2 lecture discourse types, we found that international students had problems comprehending wadan made up of beginning and intermediate level complex sentential sentence patterns. A comparison of‘communicative units’used by Japanese and international students in comprehension surveys showed that international students had difficulty comprehending points related to the discourse pattern of each lecture. We also verified the results of a content-dividing survey of the 3 student groups watching videotapes of the 2 lectures. We propose methods of learning Japanese for improving international students’ability to summarize university lectures.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements	1986年以降の「文章・談話論」に基づく日本語の読解・作文教育の「要約文」の共同研究の成果に加え、2000年からは講義の談話の表現特性と受講者の講義理解調査との関連を解明して、「日本語機能文型」の研究と教材開発等の研究成果を上げてきた。また、大学生と留学生対象の講義の「内容区分」調査の結果を検証し、受講者の講義理解の「要約力」を高める講義の談話構造を理解して、要点を把握し、表現する学習方法を提案した。
