Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The main objectives of the third and final year of this project were to continue to conduct research and disseminate the results through the following methods: 1) continue to analyze and publish the results of the data from the first two years of the project, 2) continue to develop, conduct, and analyze the effect of humor competency training sessions, and 3) continue to present findings at domestic and international conferences. With regards to the first objective, the results of our year one study on English satirical news were officially published in the TESOL Journal. For this experiment, we provided humor competency training to help Japanese learners of English better detect English satirical news and thus develop their English humor competence, digital and media literacy, and reading skills. With regards to the second objective, we continued to develop the humor competency training sessions started in year two in helping Japanese learners of English to better detect and respond to English sarcasm. For this study we again developed a pre and post-test for 70 students and conducted humor competency training for the experimental group. The results of this training were written up for a forthcoming book chapter on humor competency training. With regards to the third objective, we again actively gave presentations on humor competency training at international conferences, including conferences held by AAAL (American Association for Applied Linguistics) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).
