Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project is centered on developing English language learning materials for the specific purpose of conducting hands-on workshops of traditional Japanese craft (kogei)in creative-tourism contexts. In the first year, data collection progressed on schedule and included four hands-on workshops taught by students from Kanazawa College of Art and five established workshops in Kyoto specializing in textile dying, hand-build ceramics, metal craft, wax based dying, and loom weaving. Transcription and analysis of the Kanazawa College of Art workshops commenced ahead of schedule in order to test viability of the framework for discourse structure analysis.

Preliminary research findings were included in a presentation made by the Principle Investigator at the 2016 Japan Association for Self-Access Learning Conference, which allowed for networking and discussion of how to most effectively incorporate the project goals in terms of antonymous learning.

Analysis also illuminated issues of lexical items, especially concerning common imperative verbs used to give hands-on instruction, which resulted in the development of a diagnostic instrument, the Verbs-for-Craft Test. The Principle Investigator published a paper in Studies of Language and Culture, 21 (Kanazawa University, 2017), which described the test’s development by corpus-based tools and defining the target language domain of procedural discourse found in workshops.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Overall, the project is moving forward on schedule. Initial plans called for a full year of data collection before focus shifted to analysis; in order to avoid over-collecting, analysis has commenced earlier than originally proposed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the first half of the 2017 fiscal year, the Principle Investigator is scheduled to present project progress at the 2017 Japan Association for Language Teaching Pan-SIG Conference in the Pragmatics-Material Writing Forum. Moreover, writing has commenced on a paper focusing on specific cohesive devices found in the context of L2 hands-on procedural discourse.

Centering on lexical items, plans for further data collection include workshops in Ishikawa Prefecture related to Wajima lacquer and Kutani porcelain as well as other relevant commercial workshops in Tokyo and Kanazawa. In the latter half of 2017, plans will focus on early trialing of prototype materials and case studies of craft professionals attempting English language-based workshops for the first time. In addition, a questionnaire will be developed to collect nation-wide data from craft professionals and other human resources currently conducting English based workshops.

Causes of Carryover

Initial budgeting included personnel expenditure allocated for assistance with both collection of large group workshops and transcription of spoken text. These expenditures were not required, since collection occurred in single individual workshops and data was exclusively transcribed by the Principle Investigator. This decision was made in order to maintain consistency in both collection and analysis.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Budget for the second year will be allocated for travel expense for further data collection in Ishikawa Prefecture and Tokyo. Funds will also be spent on a graduate-level research assistant to help with developing a questionnaire to be distributed to established commercial workshops across Japan. Additional budget will be used for questionnaire postage.
