Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We have completed phase one of the research. This phase consisted of correlating student personality profiles with TEL feedback engagement factors. Cluster analysis was used to reduce the number of personality grouping and multiple regression was used to determine the level of correlation with TEL engagement factors. We completed the piloting of the personality survey and determined the personality clusters which correlate with app engagement.
We have completed construction of the beta 1 version research app and 3 activities. Furthermore, we have measured the instructional efficiency of each activity and identified the activity with the highest engagement. We are currently working with a company that can provide server side assistance to help us set up a secure and safe database to collect data from the mobile app we are developing. They are currently finish testing the system and when it is ready we will start piloting this summer and into the fall. Security and data integrity is a high priority at this stage.
We have presented several papers at domestic conferences and several more workshops have already been accepted for the coming fiscal year. Furthermore, our research is slightly ahead of schedule so we will attempt several additional components of the research.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

We have started building the main app for phase two. This app contains many research features such as 1. Server-side database for data collection and metrics collection; 2. Multimedia English learning tasks; 3.Be usable on both android and iOS devices; 4. A visualization module to analyse the data in real time as learners progress through the learning materials. Much of the technical work for the app has been completed in the last 3 months of FY2016. The remainder of the research app will be completed before summer 2017, followed by testing. Final data collection will start in the fall of 2017.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Data will be collected during the fall of 2017 and correlations between student personality profiles and their engagement behavior will be conducted. When complete the English learning app will have social features, challenge features and feedback features that should be appealing to learners with specific personality profiles. The main focus of this research will be to see whether there is a correlation between learners’ personality and their performance and their play behavior.
We will start the write up at the end of 2017 and into the beginning of the final year in FY 2018, followed by several conference presentations and paper submissions.

Causes of Carryover

Expenses incurred in the first year included several items that we were able to buy at a price lower than expected. We will use the left over funding for additional services in the following year.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

The roll over money will be used to hire additional consulting for security and server side data collection.
