Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Most of this year has been spent working with a third party to provide server-side assistance setting up a secure database for the mobile app that works on both iOS and Android devices. Security and data integrity were the key focus of this phase. The system has been tested and found to meet our research criteria and needs. Data from each device can now be securely sent to a server where we can then analyze the metrics. Setting up this link between each device for both platforms and creating a console to filter and analyze the data has taken most of the year, which was a little longer than expected. We also spent several months refining and debugging the activities in order to target specific personality types. This phase of the project was informed by our pilot study and by extensive play testing from volunteers. As a result, this has delayed the last round of data collection. However, we will still be able to finish the entire research project on schedule in the allotted three years.
In addition to the work we carried out preparing for our final round of data collection in the third year, we have presented our preliminary finding at several education and technology conferences. Furthermore, we have published several papers.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

In the first year of the project we were slightly ahead of schedule which allowed us to absorb some the delays in this second year. The reason for the second-year delays were mainly due to the technical difficulties due to setting up two different platforms, both iOS and Android and getting both systems to work seamlessly with the required level of security and reliability. This was then integrated into the app for both platforms and successfully debugged and tested. After many months of integration, we are on schedule for our last round of data collection at the beginning of the last year. The English language learning app has social and challenge features as well as feedback and progress indicators to appeal to different personality profiles which we uncovered in our pilot study.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the final year of this project, we will finish our last round of data collection in the spring semester from April to July. Based on the results of the first round of piloting, which was completed in the 1st year and our ability to collect advanced metrics from our English learning app from individual devices, we will now use the personality survey data in conjunction with the behavior mechanics from the app to complete our research investigation. We will collect over 30 different metrics to determine the correlation between personality and learner’s usage behavior. Furthermore, we will write up our findings on personality profiles and English language usage metrics. Lastly, we will submit at least one paper for publication and give several more presentations on our research project.

Causes of Carryover

There was a very small amount of money left over from the current fiscal year from purchases that were slightly off from expected. However, the total amount of actual purchases was very near the planned values. We will use the small amount left over for travel and conference expenses in the final year.
