Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the first year of the project, we used the beta version of English learning app to collect pilot data. We ran a cluster analysis to reduce the number of student personality profiles. This was followed by a correlation analysis with engagement factors.
In the second year of the project, we spent a considerable time setting up a secure data collection system from mobile devices to a secure server. Furthermore, we moved from the beta version of the app to a finished version, which included bug fixes and learning mechanic refinements. Several presentations were given on the construction of the data collection research app and pilot phase of the project, as well as several papers on the initial progress made.
In the final year of the project, we conducted the main data collection phase in the spring of the third year. This data collection consisted of personality profiles and in-game behavior metrics. Preliminary analysis showed that those students who had higher conscientious personality traits scored higher on post tests and outperformed those students with lower conscientious scores. Further analysis will follow in the coming year.
The data collection was completed, and several presentations were given during the summer and fall of this project year. The final research paper write-up and journal submissions will take place in the year 2019 during the extension period.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

The project has been completed as planned. We tested the beta version of the app during the pilot study during the first year. In the second, we were able to debug the app learning activities and complete the data acquisition system using a secure server. In the third year, we completed the main data collection measuring game play behaviors and collected personality profiles from subjects.
The project was completed, and data has been collected. However, due to unforeseen circumstances the write-up and final analysis have been delayed by one year. A one year extension has been approved and during this time, we will complete the analysis with the data collected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

During the extension year, we will complete the analysis of personality traits with game play behavior and English pre-post test scores with the data collected during the main data collection phase of the project. All the in-game metrics, personality data and test scores have been collected and systematically organized for statistical analysis. In the coming year, we will run correlation and MANCOVA analysis to determine any patterns in play behavior as a function of personality traits.
