Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Several goals for the fourth year of the project were completed. The main goal was to promote a set of procedures for a self-guided research project that language teachers in Japan could follow in order to conduct a meaningful study and build knowledge in quantitative research methods. This was done at an international conference for language teachers based in the Asia Pacific area and at national conference for language teachers in Japan. Audience members were given materials for a set of procedures based on the study that was conducted through the main professional development project that took place in 2018. Additionally, the broader approach to professional development through collaborative research was shared at several conferences this year. Next, sixteen teachers involved in the 2018 professional development project were working on their data analysis in the spring of 2019 and took the opportunity to write and publish short reports on their studies or experience with the professional development project in a Japan-based journal, Extensive Reading in Japan. Five other teachers completed full reports that they published in in-house departmental journals. A total of six presentations were given at academic conferences throughout the year. One manuscript was published and a second one was accepted for publication.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Most of the steps and goals of the project were completed on schedule; however, a goal of a meta-analysis of all the project participants’ data was not completed as expected. During the original grant period, there were several participants who could not submit their data due to the deadline set within the project. An extension for the grant was obtained in order to wait for their work to be completed and submitted for inclusion in the meta-analysis.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The participants whose data analysis has fallen behind schedule will be encouraged and supported to continue their work until the data is completely analyzed. Because this is primarily a professional development project for the teachers, the burden for this work will be placed on their shoulders as much as possible. However, greater intervention will be conducted as necessary. Initial steps for the meta-analysis have been put in place, but once the complete data set is available, the analysis will be conducted. A manuscript will be written to report the findings and presentation opportunities will be pursued to share the results, both nationally and internationally. A final report for the entire project will be prepared by the end of the year.
|
Causes of Carryover |
There was an unused budget in anticipation of the required year-long extension. This is primarily due to the decision to hold off on purchases on new resource materials until the new school year and a delay for an international presentation until the new school year. The additional funds moved to the budget for Fiscal Year 2020 will cover these costs.
