Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to the extended Covid-19 lockdown and continued need for emergency remote teaching for the principal investigator and project’s participating teachers, key goals for the first extension year of this project were largely unmet. However, several important accomplishments were achieved this year. First, a manuscript was published that involved a collaboration with the principal and four teacher participants in the project. This manuscript was published in a journal with easy access for a key audience of language teachers in Japan. Additionally, results of the project were shared at two online conferences, one national and one international. The publication and presentations further the project’s main goal of promoting an approach to self-guided, collaborative research projects that language teachers in Japan could follow in order to conduct a meaningful study and build knowledge in quantitative research methods. Next, among the sixteen teachers involved in the 2018 professional development project, two more, who had missed earlier deadlines, were able to complete data analysis and write and publish manuscripts based on the results of the studies they conducted with the project. Guidance was provided by the principal investigator during this stage of their work.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Most of the steps and goals of the project have been completed on schedule; however, a goal of a meta-analysis of all the project participants’ data was not completed as expected. During the original grant period, there were several participants who could not submit their data due to the deadline set within the project. An extension for the grant was obtained in order to wait for their work to be completed and submitted for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Some of the teachers completed this task, but not all of the teachers have yet. They have reported that the changes caused by the Covid-19 lockdown has resulted in these delays. As a result, this has also delayed the completion of the principal investigator’s planned meta-analysis that involves all of the data from the participants’ projects. Furthermore, a presentation on the project that was scheduled a large international conference in Europe in the summer of 2020 could not take place because the conference was rescheduled to 2021 because of Covid-19.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The extension of this project for one additional year allows an opportunity for more of the project participants to complete their goals of a published manuscript. The participants whose data analysis has fallen behind schedule will be encouraged and supported to continue their work until the data is completely analyzed. While a goal of the meta-analysis is to include data from all the teachers, the principal investigator has set a deadline of July 31, 2021 for the remaining teachers. Those who fail to complete their projects by that time will not contribute data to the meta-analysis. The principal investigator will present at the international conference remotely in the summer of 2021. This extension allowed the principal investigator to submit an additional presentation proposal for an international conference in the fall of 2021 to further implement the project goals. A final report for the entire project will be prepared by the end of the year.

Causes of Carryover |
There was an unused budget because of the postponed conference and delays caused by the Covid-19 lockdown. The additional funds moved to the budget for Fiscal Year 2021 will cover these costs.
