Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to the extended Covid-19 lockdown and continued need for emergency remote teaching for the principal investigator, key goals for the second extension year of this project were largely unmet. However, several important accomplishments were achieved this year. First, results of the project were shared at two international online conferences. The presentations further the project’s main goal of promoting an approach to self-guided, collaborative research projects that language teachers in Japan could follow in order to conduct a meaningful study and build knowledge in quantitative research methods. Additionally, four proposals for presentations were submitted to conferences for which three are international conferences and one is a local conference.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Most of the steps and goals of the project were completed on schedule; however, a goal of a meta-analysis of all the project participants’ data was not completed as expected. During the original grant period, there were several participants who could not submit their data due to the deadline set within the project. An extension for the grant was obtained in order to wait for their work to be completed and submitted for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Some of the teachers completed this task, but not all of the teachers have yet. They have reported that the changes caused by the Covid-19 lockdown has resulted in these delays. As a result, this has also delayed the completion of the principal investigator’s planned meta-analysis that involves all of the data from the participants’ projects.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The focus of the extension year in 2022 will be on three main tasks: 1) compiling the data from the final set of participating teachers, conducting a meta-analysis, preparing a manuscript based on this analysis and 2) presenting at national and international conferences about the project. 3) Preparing and submitting the final report for the grant. All stages of the project are expected to complete in this extended year of the grant.

Causes of Carryover |
There was an unused budget because of the postponed conference and delays caused by the Covid-19 lockdown. The additional funds moved to the budget for Fiscal Year 2022 will cover these costs.
