Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the second year of the current project, we achieved our aim of creating a medical English flipped learning course for third-year medical students, following advice from medical experts and classroom trials. This approach, involving pre-course study using the university’s Learning Management System, Bb9, enabled us to place content related to receptive skills online and increase efficiency regarding classroom contact hours. This content includes essays and audio, and a variety of pedagogic matching and multiple choice tasks.

In the past year, we have presented our findings at several domestic and international conferences. We have also published a number of articles documenting the creation, teaching, and evaluation of the flipped learning course.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Work has progressed reasonably smoothly in developing and adapting material for placement on the Bb9 Learning Management System, although there have been some minor technical issues which still need to be overcome.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Feedback from the students has been extremely positive, and showed that almost all of them found the combined online and classroom-based course useful and motivating. We will continue to develop and refine materials and tasks for the online course. We also hope to collate and expand the classroom materials with the aim of publishing these in the form of a textbook for students studying medical English at university.

Causes of Carryover

We have kept some money in reserve so that it will be possible to attend as many conferences as possible in the final year of the project, including the BAAL Annual Conference to be held in York, UK, in September.
