Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year my co-researcher and I successfully published two international-level papers based on the research we have been conducting with this project, participated at four international conferences, and build a solid network of research associates for future work. Our work has been published in Frontline Learning Research and Motivation & Emotion, two highly respected publications in the field of motivation and education. Our research has demonstrated that, moving from elementary school to junior high school, students with a positive self-efficacy for learning English also develop a more positive self-efficacy for learning Japanese. This finding is important as it indicates that developing students' confidence in a foreign language can have positive feedback effects on students native language. This shows the positive effect that good foreign language instruction can have on students' lives beyond the ability to communicate with non-Japanese speakers. With regard to the research plans, we successfully collected data from our participating schools, and have maintained good relationships with them. We currently have received motivation and achievement data for the first two years of the study. During the course of the year, we have also worked to disseminate the research results back to participating schools. We participated in local board of education sponsored teacher training events, and helped to coordinate better understanding of foreign language pedagogical methods.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have successfully collected the data we intended to collect for this school year. Based on our research design, we planned to gather surveys at two time points this year, as well as achievement data. This data has been safely collected, processed, and stored. We have also successfully publicized the work through academic publications and presentations, all thanks to the funding we received. We have also worked closely with the participating schools to do teacher training workshops and promote better relationships with the research participants. We have also completed the analysis for an in-depth, high-level study of junior high school students' motivation for learning English. We are currently preparing this analysis for presentation and publication.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the final year of the research, we plan to follow the same data gathering plan as the first two years. We will be in close contact with the participating schools, and coordinate with them in order to receive the requisite survey and achievement data. We intend to publish at least two more international-level papers in highly respected journals this year based on the data we have received. These publications will then be used to develop a model of how to effectively motivate Japanese secondary school students to learn English. We will present our analyses and results at several international conferences during the current academic year, including the American Educational Research Association and International Conference on Motivation.
