Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2019 we presented our findings at several international conferences and concluded our study. We continued to pilot our specifically designed culturally familiar materials in classrooms and have several forthcoming pieces about their design, use, and efficacy. Using our specially designed culturally familiar materials, we demonstrated considerable language gains and retention in all four skills. In addition to publishing multiple articles that detail our methodology and our results, the researchers have led workshops to introduce our research and material development with other educators. We hosted a symposium that circulated our results and served as a forum for other researchers working on similar topics (Multicultural Japan Research and Methodologies for Teaching Language and Culture, Dec 2019). In addition, we are in the final stages of work on two textbooks to teach English to Japanese learners based on our culturally familiar approach.
