Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Regarding the assessment of progress due to literacy instruction, we have obtained the results from EIKEN STEP for both Takamori JHS and ES school students. We also conducted independent onsite tests on ES grade sixes and JHS second graders. The researcher investigated the background to literacy instruction and wrote a paper: Pederson, S. (2017). Sequencing Literacy Instruction in Japanese Elementary School English Classes: Using the MEXT-Designated Hi Friends + Materials Effectively. Memoirs of the Faculty of Education, Kumamoto University, 34 47-51. Numerous English lessons were videotaped, fully transcribed and analyzed in terms of communication media and purposes of communication. About 16 lessons are available at present for analysis. This activity is ongoing.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Activities have been slightly disrupted and delayed due to scheduling changes due to last year's earthquake. But essentially things are proceeding as planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Over the next 6 months, we will continue to collect, transcribe and analyze lessons. Next January, tests data will once again be collected. This time it can be compared with previous data. More data must be collected specifically on the reading and writing lessons. Writing up findings and publishing reports will be possible in certain areas during this year. In particular, much can be done to analyze the lesson transcripts and draw conclusions.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Costs next year are to continue gathering data in a distant community and for labor costs of transcribing video data.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Several trips will be made to the site under investigation, data will be transcribed by a research assistant. This will take up most of the cost for this year. In addition an interim report is planned so printing costs will be incurred.
