Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The implementation of the new Course of Study for Japanese elementary schools published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology commenced in 2020. In this reform, English is being introduced to younger grade children and English has become a core subject for the first time. This study was carried out during the period when teachers and schools were preparing for this change. The empirical research was carried out to investigate and analyse three main perspectives of elementary school teachers: 1) their beliefs and attitudes towards this reform; 2) a self-evaluation of their English abilities; and, 3) their classroom practices. In addition, in order to provide an international context for the Japanese reform, English teaching practices in South Korea, China and Cambodia as well as foreign language education in the UK and New Zealand were observed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
