Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Archival research in England: National Maritime Museum, Caird Library (London, Greenwich); The National Archive (TNA, Kew), London Metropolitan Archives; the Modern Record Centre, Warwick University, and the School of African and Oriental Studies, London.

Photographing, photocopying, and scanning of the following materials, among others: crew lists of selected ships (especially from BT 99), Colonial Office documents on labour and shipping in East Africa, Foreign Office documents on Somaliland, and on East Africa generally. At the TNA, scanning of “seamens pouches” for a selection of Somali seamen. Collection of relevant contemporary publications.

Evaluation of archival documents: assessment of crew lists with regard to Somali crew members and ships’ names, ships’ voyages, ports of recruitment, date and place of birth, by focusing on key years between the 1890s and 1920s. For the year 1915, all the ships for which crew lists have been recorded at the Caird Library have been assessed for Somali crew members with regard to the above criteria. Assessment of relevant articles in ‘The Seaman’, the periodical publication of the British seafarers’ trade union.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research and expenditure level corresponds to the initial plan for FY2016.

For reasons of research preparation, the archival research was carried out in August/September 2016 (instead of July). Moreover, a follow-up research was carried out at the Maritime Museum and at the National Archives, London, in March 2017. This research has sifted additional materials and verified documents related to those collected during the archival research in August.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Mid-August - mid-September 2017: research at the following locations and archives:

France: Archives Nationales d’Outre-Mer (ANOM), Aix-en-Provence; Marseilles (municipal archives); Frenchlines Archive (Messageries Maritimes), Le Havre; Germany: Bundesarchiv Berlin-Lichterfelde, Staatsarchiv Bremen, Staatsarchiv Hamburg; Switzerland: International Labor Office, Geneva (ILO).

Changes compared to the original planning: the archives at Marseille and Le Havre have been added. The period of research has been adjusted to suit research needs. Moreover, the research at ANOM will be shortened to accommodate the research at Le Havre and Marseille.

Causes of Carryover

Endeavor not to overspend the budget but get the budget as close to zero as possible

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

The amount will be added to the budget for FY2017.
