Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Archival research has been carried out during two overseas research trips (August/September 2017, and February 2018).
During the first research trip additional archival material has been collected from the Bundesarchiv Berlin-Lichterfelde, Staatsarchiv Hamburg, Staatsarchiv Bremen, The National Archives (London), and the British Library. New archival material has been collected in France from the French Lines archives (Le Havre) and the archives of the Chamber of Commerce (Marseille), and from the International Labor Office Library (Geneva, Switzerland). This research has focused on crew lists of ships sailing from Europe to the Indian and Pacific oceans, on ship captain’s reports, and on consular correspondence on shipping. The second research trip has collected material from the Imperial War Museum (London) the Glamorgan Archive (Cardiff) and the Austrian state archive (Vienna). This research has focused, respectively, on a prisoner of war camp for seamen, on crew lists for Welsh shipping lines, and on the Austrian Lloyd shipping company.
Data analysis has been done for part of the archival material. Additional online data on crew lists have been collected from The National Archives (Kew, London) with the help of anアルバイトcontract.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In general, the research corresponds to the initial plan for FY2017. However, for reasons of time constraints, this research has been conducted in two parts. Moreover, the research visit to Aix-en-Provence has been dropped.
The amount of \200,480 has been carried over to the budget for FY2018. This sum will be used for further archival research.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Additional research regarding crew lists will be carried out at the Maritime History Archive, St. John’s, Newfoundland, in early August 2018.
A symposium on maritime labour will be organized at Osaka University with three overseas specialists in mid-December. The aim is to discuss research results with specialists in relevant fields of study on the basis of research papers.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The amount was kept for FY2018 in order to be able to conduct the archival research listed below.
The sum will be used to do research at the Maritime History Archive, St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada). The research will be carried out in early August 2018.
