Outline of Final Research Achievements

In historical studies, the Edo period is recognized as a society in which discrimination between the samurai and peasants is a strong one.It was a common understanding that peasants were disarmed, only the samurai possessed weapons, and peasants were forced to concentrate on agriculture. However, through this study, it was possible to confirm that a large number of civilian swordsmen existed throughout all of Japan from the early to the end of the Edo period. It was possible to fully demonstrate that the Edo period was the era of civilian swordsmen.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
