This research project explored methods and methodology for utilising an archaeological site as cultural resources of the local community, building on the excavation of the so-called "Villa of Augustus (Villa di Augusto)" in Somma Vesuviana, Italy, led by a team from the University of Tokyo.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的・社会的意義は、①発掘調査終了後からある程度時間が経過した遺跡の活用を探るのではなく、発掘調査が進行中の段階から調査終了後の遺跡活用の方策を探った点、また、②その方策を一般化し、多くの発掘調査中の遺跡に適用できる遺跡の文化資源化の方法論として提示した点に見出だせる。いまだ発掘調査中の段階において、遺跡を調査終了後にどのように活用するかを社会科学的に考査した研究は世界的にも存在せず、その意味において本研究はパブリックアーケオロジーの新たな領域を切り拓くことに貢献したと言える。
