Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, I clarified the alteration in the modern times and the present conditions of Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christian) in Sotome region (Nagasaki city). The manners and customs of Kakure Kirishitan have changed in modern times. On the other hand, Kakure Kirishitan recognize that the essence of the faith has not changed. As the world heritage registration campaign became active, Kakure Kirishitan came to attract attention and be treated as one of the components of the property in effect. I revealed the influence of such treatment on their consciousness.
Furthermore, I pointed out the significance of the world heritage registration of "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" and analyzed the problems of its letter of recommendation and future issues.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、(1)長崎市外海地区のかくれキリシタンの近代における変遷と現状、(2)かくれキリシタン習俗の文化遺産化、(3)「潜伏キリシタン関連遺産」世界遺産登録の意義と問題点、を明らかにした。
(1)と(2)の前半は先行研究では見られなかった視点からのアプローチと調査結果であり、(2)の後半と(3）は研究期間に起きたことを即時的に調査・分析したものであるため、全体として新規性・独創性が高く、学術的意義も大きい。また、研究成果の一部はすでに書籍等で公開しているが、本研究課題は社会的な関心が高く、新聞やTEDX、市民向けの講座など様々な形で公表してきた。したがって、社会的意義も大きいといえる。
