Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project aims to address how Creating Shared Value (CSV) is uniquely applied in Asia and create the optimal suggestion for Asia’s sustainable business leadership. FY2016 was the Preliminary comprehensive review period. The selected outcomes are:
1) A total of 240 sustainability reports (top 20 companies in three nations [Japan, Korea and China] for 4 years [2012-2015]) were analysed. The outcome of the literature review and the analysis of reports was submitted to the peer-reviewed journal "Management Decision" and is in the R&R process. 2) A total of 31 pilot interviews were accomplished (Japan - 18; Korea - 13). The number of interviewees is the combination with the initial research on CSV. Interviewees include business practitioners, scholars and various stakeholders. 3) The researcher has actively shared the interim outcome of the project. 4) The researcher has tried to explore the perception and voices regarding CSV of China by attending academic conferences and communication with various researchers on China and Chinese management system. It was found that the discussion on the CSV issues is still weak and very vague in China (*The outcome 1) is critically discussed on this fact). Instead, it was revealed that the CSV discussion is more active in another part of Asia - India, by linking government initiative as inclusive growth is a top priority for the country. In this light, it is suggested that to add India for investigating Asian CSV is plausible. The preliminary investigation is in process.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The main goal of this preliminary stage is to explore the answers on the research questions: 1) how has the CSV idea been perceived throughout Asian history? (History and Norms); and 2) what are the logics in Asian CSV which differ from the West? (Theory and Knowledge). By comprehensively combining all the 4 outcomes as stated above, the researcher could find the answers on the two research questions, and is ready to go the major exploratory stage (FY2017).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The 2nd phase (FY2017) is the "major exploratory stage" by having extensive interviews with major stakeholders in each nation. The researcher is planning to find the answers on research question 3) how can the Asian CSV Model be created, performed and disseminated? (Institutional dynamics). This study will carry out mixed methods (i.e., extensive interview, observation & participation, and focus group) in order to secure an in depth understanding of the phenomenon. The point of departure for this stage is to identify the current CSV phenomenon in Asia and the West, and compare it especially with regard to businesses' everyday experience, such as work practices and environmental/sustainable management strategy. Interviewees will include: CEO, CSR professionals, academics and other related stakeholders. More specifically, the researcher will seek to find distinct voices on CSV of Asia, and share the outcome with and receive the feedback from international business and academic society continuously.
