Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The project aims to address how CSV (Creating Shared Value) is applied in Asia and create the CSV Model of Asia by suggesting some insights for Asian business and society. FY2017 was the major exploratory stage. Extensive interviews with major stakeholders in each nation was accomplished.

1) As of March 2018, a total of 77 in-depth face-to-face interviews was accomplished throughout Asia. Interviewees include: business practitioners, CSV/CSR professionals, related stakeholders, and academics in Japan, Korea, India, and other nations, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore. In addition, there are very few systematic studies that directly address the theoretical views of CSV in Asia and Asian institutional dynamics. The present project seeks to tackle this gap. The outcome of the analysis of comprehensive literature review and interview was submitted to the peer-reviewed journal - Asian Business & Management and is in the Revise & Resubmit process.

2) The researcher has actively shared the interim outcome of the project throughout the world (i.e., Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia and the USA), by presenting the paper and delivering the keynote speech. To update the data and analysis for making finalized Asian CSV model is under progressing.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The main goal of this exploratory stage is to find the answers on research question 3) how can the Asian CSV Model be created, performed and disseminated? (Institutional dynamics). This study carried out mixed methods (i.e., extensive interview, observation & participation, and sharing with related stakeholders) in order to secure an in depth understanding of the phenomenon. This endeavour will be continued till the final stage for updating and finalising the present project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The 3rd phase (FY2018) is the last stage for building an ‘Asian CSV Model’. Through the process of phase 1 and 2, I critically investigated the gap between the CSV view and workplace issues in Asia and the West. The aim of the research, however, is to pursue not only the recognition of the reality, but also to build an ‘Asian CSV Model’ and suggest new implications to the academic and practitioners society. Hence, the project will make a deliberate attempt to examine and explain what the selected businesses are doing, and thus to paint a picture of potential best practices. As a final outcome, I aim to strive to make rigorous “Asian CSV Model” by engaging the process of peer-review publications and presentations.

Causes of Carryover

I have managed to do the exploratory research with the fund with small amount of carry-over. The carry-over will be used as a part of expenditure for distribution activities of the main outcome of the project - CSV Model, throughout Asia and the world.
