Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research aims to explore the resilience of diversified business groups in developed and emerging economies. In particular it aims to analyze the external environmental and internal organizational factors to explain the resilience of business groups cross-nationally and over time. I collected the necessary information on the developed economies that I have been lacking. I especially focused on the institutional factors and examined the long-term evolution of the institutions (economic as well as non-economic) to particularly affect diversified business groups. I have presented my findings at a conference I have co-organized at the Harvard Business School in 2016. I also gave a seminar at the Kyoto University’s Economic Department. Furthermore, I have submitted two papers to two international volumes.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have been progressing as initially planned in my research. In this first year I have mostly concentrated on gathering data on developed economies and their diversified business groups, which I have been lacking originally. This also fits well with my research agenda as those developed economy, especially Western, business groups are the core target of my study.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year, I am aiming to analyze the descriptive and qualitative data I have gathered so far. I aim to examine three issues in particular: First, I aim to identify the largest business groups within the nations that are the targets of my study. Second, I aim to examine the strategies and structures and the evolution of those for the largest business groups in my sample. Finally, I aim to explore the specific market and institutional environment to shape the strategies and structures of business groups in a systematized way. I aim to go back to gathering further data and doing field research whenever necessary for my analyses. Towards the end of this year, I aim to have sufficient amount of analyses and manuscripts organized by subject. I then aim to prepare for submission to international journals as well as conferences.

Causes of Carryover |
I have not used research assistants as I have planned for this year, as I did most data gathering myself.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I plan to employ research assistants in this academic year as I will need help in organizing all the data and analyzing them.
