Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to clarify the formation and development process of health, medical and welfare activities in rural areas by the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) from a historical sociological perspective, through literature research and interviews. This part of the research mainly focused on elderly welfare activities; the increasing demands for services for the aging population resulted in various organizations offering welfare services. This signified the appearance of welfare pluralism in Japan. JA's elderly welfare activities allowed them to restructure this part of their operations, expanded their business, and came to define an important part of their existence. The research found that JA's activities, based on the spirit of mutual aid, were closely attached to the qualitative changes in the life issues not only of its members but also of local residents.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
