Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To overcome the major challenges in realization of graphene-based technology, the present research project is focused on exploring a new chemical method for direct binding of radical species from its sources onto the graphene.According to the initial plan, I have succeeded in functionalization, for the first time, of graphene with SH group in the second year of the project. In this case, instead of using the Grignard reagents mixture, I have used the diazotization reaction of primary amines. Based on the results obtained for the SH functionalization of graphene, I have published a paper in J. Phys. Chem. C and presented oral presentation in different international conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The present research project is going as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Since the SH group can bind with Au atoms through covalent bonding, the SH functionalized graphene is expected to be utilized as the platform for capturing the gold particles. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) possess distinct physical, chemical and optoelectric properties that it an excellent material for the fabrication of novel chemical and biological sensors. Hence I will focus on the immobilization of AuNPs on graphene followed by further reaction with some simple bio molecules as planned initially. The modified surface will be characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscope, Raman spectroscopy.
